We acknowledge the tradition of custodianship and law of the Country on which the University of Sydney campuses stand. We pay our respects to those who have cared and continue to care for Country.

Our Indigenous strategy outlines our commitment to creating higher education and leadership opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and valuing Indigenous culture.

We offer a range of initiatives to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who dream of studying with us, including our pre-tertiary outreach program, admission pathways and scholarships and other financial support.

Our services and facilities also include study spaces, academic workshops, ongoing tuition and accommodation support, as well as mentoring and other networks for new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students settling into university life.

Your history, your future

The University of Sydney was founded in 1850 on the land of the Gadigal people.

Today, our campuses and facilities stretch across the lands of the Gamaraygal, Dharug, Wangal, Darkingyung, Burramadagal, Dharawal, Gandangara, Gamilaraay, Barkindji, Bundjalung, Wiradjuri, Ngunawal, Gureng Gureng and Gagadju peoples.

Our work, and saying 'YES', continues

The Indigenous Strategy and Services portfolio of the University of Sydney emphatically endorsed the Uluru Statement from the Heart and supported the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a Voice to Parliament.

With the referendum defeated on 14 October, the Indigenous Strategy and Services portfolio reflects on the University's ongoing commitment to valuing, respecting and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's knowledges and cultures.

"In many ways at the University, we say YES every day, particularly through our unwavering commitment to the One Sydney, Many People Strategy, affirming our dedication to inclusivity, diversity and the collective wellbeing of our community," said Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services).

We say YES to Indigenous research and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and being – all of which shape us as a uniquely Australian world-class University.
